Dance Floor Activities

The wedding reception is one of the most enjoyable activities for the attendees of a wedding.  This especially includes the wedding party, who has had a long grueling couple of days.  Think about it—they have had to have their hair done, do rehearsals and many have had to travel long distances.  The wedding reception gives everyone a chance to let loose after such a formal occasion as a wedding ceremony.  The dance floor is the perfect way to do that.

So besides having music playing and lights, what else can you do to make the dancing at your wedding special and fun?  Well, first of all, play classic songs or songs involving classic dances that everyone remembers, such as the Hustle or the Macarena.

Making the dance floor more exciting is easy to do.  Start a train.  You’ll be amazed how many people will join in.  Pretty soon the whole room will be spirals of people with their hands on each others shoulders!  Do fun dances, silly dances, contests.  Play ‘name that tune’ and offer prizes to winners.

Another great opportunity at receptions which the dance floor can facilitate is family members and friends of the bride and groom getting to know one another.  Pass the microphone around and have each member identify themselves.  There are often hundreds of people at a wedding and it is unlikely that everyone knows each other.  If passing the microphone, it is best to use a wireless one and only allow adults to hold it (children are likely to drop it).  Many DJs have wireless microphones these days, so this makers things easier.

If there is dancing talent among your family, you may have dance contests.  Musically inclined guests may even choose to do karaoke!  The bride and groom may have special songs picked out, but there is still usually room for requests!  Request your favorite song to get down and boogie to or a warm love song for couples.

Special dances are, of course, a wedding reception staple.  The bride and groom have to dance at least once or twice.  The father of the bride usually shares a special dance with the bride, too.  Another option is to have everyone take turns dancing with the bride or groom (opposite genders).

If you run out of ideas like these when planning the reception, ask the DJ.  DJs have been to countless weddings and other special occasions and know just the thing that will make your celebration spectacular.   Make sure your DJ is full of life, even if you have to pay extra.  Don’t hire Cousin Joey unless he has skills as an announcer.  A voice which can project is essential to cut through the racket at a reception.  And people usually respond more to an energetic person on the microphone.

These things can turn an otherwise ordinary wedding reception into a downright blast!
