Making Marriage Work

Making a marriage a success is not easy. This is amply evident by the increasing number of divorces that are heard of today. Making a marriage successful requires an understanding of the reasons for failure and an understanding of the essential requirement for success. If you figure this out then your marriage will not be a divorce statistic but a success statistic.

Taking the other for granted is the single most common mistake that ninety percent of married couples make. It’s like you take it for granted that if you boil water you will get steam. For these people marriage is just another thing that needs to be done like brushing your teeth first thing in the morning or wearing shoes or getting a haircut. So with this mindset the general feeling is that marriage does not need any study or understanding, it will happen and one will learn along the way.

Marriage requires effort. It can be fun or you could club it with the diaper and dishes routine. Here is one party where you are the guest and the host. Of course marriage is also about bills and debts and related worries but if your relationship with your spouse is strong then these hiccups are just that, hiccups that come and go. So it would be fair to say that marriage is what the husband and wife make out of it and if they want their children to have good personalities then the relationship between spouses must be good too. Marriage requires work and some amount of forbearance.

If you had gotten married thinking this is going to be one long party then think again. At some point reality steps in and you may start feeling cheated because this is not what you expected. So to keep your marriage a real party all the time you must keep a few pointers in mind.

The first thing to remember is that you need understanding of the intelligent variety. This understanding is very important in making a marriage successful. Some amount of knowledge in interpersonal relationships will help a great deal. You need to learn about the hows and whys of being good spouses and subsequently good parents.

There are some who advocate couples to undergo complete training in which they face situations with economic problems, family problems, children and child psychology and even the effect of broken homes on children. Couples should undergo a mock program where they learn the responsibility of the church and the opportunities therein. This type of course would teach the would-be couple about where they could go wrong. Here there is a chance to rectify matters but in a real marriage divorce could be the outcome and it will not be easy then.

So while you may enter into matrimony with all good intentions, at some point you do need knowledge in how to deal with difficult situations. Happiness cannot be taken for granted and there has to be a lot of effort from both sides to make happiness work.
